Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Day is observed annually on the third Monday in January. In 2024 it is on his actual birthday which is January 15, 1929.
The thirty-fifth (35th) annual parade honoring his birthday will be held in Elizabethtown, North Carolina on Monday, January 15, 2024 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
Martin Luther King Day celebrates the life and accomplishment of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. MLK promoted Civil Rights through nonviolent civil disobedience. He is perhaps best known for his 'I have a dream...' speech in 1963. He was assassinated in 1968. The day is a federal United States holiday with all government and most business offices closed. President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law in 1983, and it was first observed three years later on January 20, 1986. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday as such, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.
