Bladen Lakes Work Day

Bladen Lakes Work Day

Saturday, April 13, 2024 (10:00 AM - 2:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Come on out for a workday at the new stretch of trail along Turnbull Creek at Bladen Lakes State Forest. The trail has been cleared mechanically to provide access for recently completed geo-tech testing for a future185-foot trail bridge over Turnbull Creek. The next step in creating this new trail is to clear any remaining debris and smooth out rough areas of soil. We will rake soil flat, pull debris off the trail, and cut away any remaining saplings or branches. It's a labor intensive task, but you don't need any special skills and the impact will be huge! WHEN: Saturday, April 13, 10:00 am. WHERE: Meet at Camp Chamblee in Bladen Lakes State Forest. It is a primitive campground at the end of the dirt road 'Camp Chamblee Trail' as accessed from Sweet Home Church Road. There we will discuss safety, go over the work plan and distribute tools. Sometimes GPS will try to direct you to Camp Chamblee from the West along forest roads, but this is not possible as there is no vehicular bridge over Turnbull Creek. Please connect onto Camp Chamblee Trail from Sweet Home Church Road. WHAT TO BRING: heavy rakes, loppers, clippers, NO POWER TOOLS, extra water, gloves, bug spray (it's tick season, so make sure you are prepared) snacks, sun screen (some parts of the trail are sunnier than you'd expect). Please make sure to label your tools so that yours go home with you. If you don't have any of these tools, don't worry, we can provide what is needed. WEAR: sturdy shoes, long pants and long socks. There are briars, so either wear long sleeves or be on the lookout so as not to be scratched. COMPLIMENTARY LUNCH: Sandwiches and chips will be provided for attendees. To help us know how much to order, please RSVP by Wednesday, April 10th. If you have special dietary restrictions please let us know in advance so we can accommodate those needs. We are so excited to add more natural surface trail in Bladen County and hope to see you there! Cell service can be spotty out there, but my number is below if you have any issues the day of. I'll send a reminder and weather update a few days ahead of time to those who have RSVPed and if weather becomes an issue I will update on the workday status 24 hours in advance. Feel free to reach out with any questions. See you there! Ben Jones, Coastal Crescent Project Manager bjones@mountainstoseatrail.org (828) 551-1545
